Budapest

Known as the "Pearl of the Danube," it boasts a remarkable architectural heritage, from the neo-Gothic Parliament Building to the medieval Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church. Visitors can take in sweeping panoramas from Castle Hill, relax in the city's celebrated thermal baths, and explore grand boulevards lined with elegant 19th-century buildings.

2

Vukovar

Vukovar, set at the confluence of the Danube and Vuka rivers in Eastern Croatia, is a town of remarkable resilience. Once a baroque jewel of the region, it played a significant and tragic role during the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s. Today, careful restoration is bringing its historic character back to life, and visitors can explore its baroque heart, riverside promenades and powerful memorial sites that tell the story of the town's past and recovery.

3

Belgrade

Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, stands at the meeting point of the Sava and Danube rivers and is one of the oldest cities in Europe. A crossroads of Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman and Slavic influences, it offers a fascinating layered heritage. Highlights include the imposing 17th-century Kalemegdan Fortress, with its sweeping river views, and the elegant pedestrianised Knez Mihailova boulevard lined with cafés, shops and grand 19th-century buildings.

4

The Iron Gates

The Iron Gates is one of the most dramatic stretches of the Danube, where the river carves its way through steep gorges that form a natural border between Serbia and Romania. The journey reveals towering cliffs, ancient landmarks and remarkable feats of engineering. Highlights along the route include the colossal rock-carved face of Decebalus, the last king of Dacia, and the historic Trajan's Plaque, a Roman inscription marking the emperor's military road through the region.

5

Ruse

Ruse, often called "Little Vienna," is the most elegant of Bulgaria's Danube cities. Its remarkable 19th-century architecture, broad boulevards and graceful squares reflect a period of prosperity and cosmopolitan refinement. At its heart lies Svoboda Square, dominated by the striking Monument of Liberty, surrounded by beautifully preserved buildings including the Regional Historical Museum and the celebrated Ruse Opera House.

6

Bucharest

Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is a city of fascinating contrasts where elegant historic quarters sit alongside imposing communist-era landmarks. The atmospheric Old Town (Lipscani) is home to lively cafés, churches and the serene Stavropoleos Monastery, while the vast Palace of the Parliament — one of the largest administrative buildings in the world — bears witness to the country's recent past. Wide boulevards, art nouveau facades and tranquil parks earned the city its old nickname, the "Little Paris of the East."
